Kim, I know that you will get the help and information that you want and need to guide you in the right direction, and to give you the best care possible. I am praying for you and sending you tons of healthy healing energy.
Hi Kim,
The trouble concentrating (or memory problems) could possibly be a symptom of encephalopathy. I'm glad you've contacted your doctor about this.
Do you take Lactulose? (Many cirrhosis patients take lactulose to help control encephalopathy. Lactulose is a prescription liquid laxative that binds with ammonia and helps remove it from the body.)
There are many things that can trigger encephalopathy to worsen in a cirrhosis patient. (Some quick examples would be-- ammonia, some medications, infection, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, internal bleeding, constipation, etc.) So I would expect your doctor to rule out possible causes one by one.
Hi Kim
I am a 80 year old male with (they say) end-stage cirrhosis.
I was hospitalized Jan, Feb and March 2010 with big time ammonia problems. If your liver is functioning good or your liver isn't able to the job of taking care of the ammonia level it sure will make you not be able to think well. My ascites, ammonia levels and other related problems is pretty well regulated.
I was diagnosed August 2009 and I'm still here!!
Make sure you eat at least 50 to 65 grams of protein daily..that wll help your strength immensley.
One of the first thing that goes is your bodys muscle mass..so do not underestimate the need for lots of protein.
there is a possibility that if you are far advanced that you will be put on 40grms a day to keep your ammonia levels low.
If I can help please let me know.

Hi tee,
Does your doctor have you on a low fat diet? Fatty foods can cause nausea (and sometimes pain and other problems) for cirrhosis patients.
(Plus with your gallbladder gone, you could have even more troubles trying to digest fatty foods.)
P.S. - Sometimes the leg cramps can be caused by electrolyte problems.
So let your doctor know about the cramps. (Your doctor can run some quick and simple bloodtests to rule out electrolyte problems.)
Hi Kim & Tee, I have had Cirrhosis since 2008.The 1st thing I would say is get yourselves Milk Thistle capsules, they help your liver to regenerate.I also have memory problems, fatigue, ect. I died 2x in one night, heart stopped completely.I was stuck in the hospital a month. It's very important to say to yourself,I'm healing, believe it.I have had problems with my sight when it comes to small print.Carrots are really good for your eyes, get some of them in your diet.Eat good things,Try plain crackers 1st if our worried about becoming ill.Try to have a real positive additude, when you find yourself being negative turn it around.I like to pray at night that I'm getting better, and pray for others too.Always find something everyday to be grateful for. that's how I handle things and I am getting better & better.
My husband has cirrosis, and is on alot of drugs, they just put him on Xanax and when he takes it he becomes a zombie, I was wondering if his body can digest Xanax. Please help
Xanax is a benzodiazepine drug.
(Usually cirrhosis patients are told to avoid benzodiazepines because they can cause encephalopathy problems to become worse.)
Is your husband seeing a hepatologist?
